The National University of Laos (NUOL) was formed in June 1995 by merger of 10 existing institutions, including the University of Health Sciences, which first began instruction in 1969 as the École Royale de Médecine du Laos. Prior to 1969, the École Royale de Médecine trained medical assistants.
